Medfield participates in an 8 town recreational softball league called the Metrowest Girls Softball League (MWGL.) There are four divisions grouped according to school grades; they are grades 1/2, grades 3/4 (AAA), grades 5/6 (Majors), and grades 7/8 (Seniors.) The towns that participate in the league besides Medfield are Ashland, Dover/Sherborn, Holliston, Medway, Millis, Needham and Westwood. Each division will create "balanced" teams with no “A” or “B” designations. Teams will be drafted by the coordinators and grade coaches. Teams will be balanced, as best as possible, based on players skill levels as determined by the coaches and coordinators. No tryouts are required for spring season.
The number of games, as well as the travel schedule, is determined by the number of teams entered in each division for each town. Historically, grades 5/6 (Majors) and grades 7/8 (Seniors) play a 12 to 14 game schedule which may begin the week prior to April vacation. The 3/4 and 1/2 grade teams play a 12 game schedule which begins the week after April vacation and runs through the last week of school in June. There are no standings or playoffs for any age/division and the goal is recreation and development.
Days of the week for games:
- Grades 7/8- Monday and Wednesday, 6 p.m.
- Grades 5/6- Tuesday and Thursday, 6 p.m.
- Grades 3/4- Monday and Wednesday, 6 p.m.
- Grades 1/2- Weeknight (TBD) and Saturday, 9 a.m.
Medfield participates in the Twin Valley summer softball league. The towns participating in the league cover many of the Metrowest Girls Softball towns as well as several towns to the North, South and West of Medfield. Travel for away games is typically more extensive than that experienced in our spring league. Summer softball is also a more competitive level of play than our spring league so players/parents should take note of this. A noticeable difference in the summer league, especially at the A level, is the speed of the pitching. Teams are not balanced, standings are kept, and for all levels except U-10B, there are playoffs.
Playing in the summer is ideal for the girls who aspire to play softball in High School and gives the girls an opportunity to experience a stronger level of competition than typically played in the spring season.
The league begins during the week of June 22 and the regular 10-game season runs for five weeks (generally two games per week). The regular season is followed by league playoffs (except at the U-10B level). The league is typically completed by the end of July.
Unlike our spring league where softball divisions are based on grades, the summer league teams are primarily based on age as follows:
- U10 - must have been 10 or under on January 1, 2018 (born 2007 or 2008).
- U12 - must have been 12 or under on January 1, 2018 (born 2005 or 2006).
- U14 - must have been 14 or under on January 1, 2018 (born 2003 or 2004).
- U18 - must have been 18 or under on January 1, 2018 (born 1999, 2000, 2001 or 2002)
The final decision on the number of teams and placement of players is based on the number of girls who sign up at each age level. Our goal is to find a team for every player interested. However, the number of girls playing summer is generally smaller and, therefore, we may need to combine with other towns to form a team. In addition, if we need to fill out a Medfield team, we may consider moving younger players up to the next age level based on the overall number of signups. In those situations, tryouts or some other form of evaluation will be used to select players.
Days of the week for games:
U10/U14 games are played on Monday and Wednesday nights, 6 p.m.
U12/U18 games are played on Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6 p.m..
For grades 3-9 Medfield participates in the Metrowest Girls Softball League. The divisions are based on the player's fall grade. The league follows the same guidelines as the spring season. It is a recreational league with balanced teams for each division. The season generally runs for 7 weeks, starting in mid-September and running until mid to late October. Games are held once a week (weekends only) as follows:
- Grades 3/4 - Saturdays, 4 p.m.
- Grades 5/6 and 7/8/9 - Sundays, 1 p.m.
For U-18 Medfield participates in a more competitive fall league (Charles River League) for girls interested in playing JV or Varsity softball in the spring. There are double-headers held on the weekend for 4 or 5 weekends. The competition is a bit better and the focus is on developing a more cohesive team. Note: This is not school sponsored team.
